چکیده

Abstract The Interreg funded project RECIF (2012-2015) developed waste shell concrete formulations specifically for artificial reefs. Its successor MARINEFF continues these evaluating further to maximise both physical performance and endurance with biological attractiveness. Four were produced by ESITC Caen trials based on combinations of two cement types (CEM II CEM IV) either coarse aggregate or crushed oyster shells replacing 20% the aggregate. most extensive colonisation carried out 5x5x2cm blocks UK French partners. These test also had smooth rough faces. This paper describes results Southampton trials. blocks, one each formulation along an cut same area secured in a framework pairs suspended vertically at 6 fully saline sites around Solent region (Calshot, Beaulieu River, Hamble Itchen Portsmouth Langstone Harbours) from May August 2019. On recovery analysed Total Biomass, Algae (PAM & %cover), Anemones (n), Ascidians (%cover), Barnacles (n % cover), Bryozoans Hydroids Mytilus edulis Pomatoceros sp. Sponges (%), Spirorbis sp (n). Denitrification and nutrient assimilation on a restored oyster reef

Global loss of 85% of oyster reef ecosystems over the past 130 yr (Beck et al. 2011) has led to both growing recognition of the services once provided by healthy oyster reef ecosystems (Grabowski et al. 2012) and increasing interest in restoring these ecosystems. In Chesapeake Bay, USA, populations of the native oyster Crassostrea virginica have been reduced to <1% of historic levels through a ...

Accounting for Multiple Foundation Species in Oyster Reef Restoration Benefits

Many coastal habitat restoration projects are focused on restoring the population of a single foundation species to recover an entire ecological community. Estimates of the ecosystem services provided by the restoration project are used to justify, prioritize, and evaluate such projects. However, estimates of ecosystem services provided by a single species may vastly under-represent true provis...

Coral Colonisation of an Artificial Reef in a Turbid Nearshore Environment, Dampier Harbour, Western Australia

A 0.6 hectare artificial reef of local rock and recycled concrete sleepers was constructed in December 2006 at Parker Point in the industrial port of Dampier, western Australia, with the aim of providing an environmental offset for a nearshore coral community lost to land reclamation. Corals successfully colonised the artificial reef, despite the relatively harsh environmental conditions at the...

Maximizing oyster-reef growth supports green infrastructure with accelerating sea-level rise

Within intertidal communities, aerial exposure (emergence during the tidal cycle) generates strong vertical zonation patterns with distinct growth boundaries regulated by physiological and external stressors. Forecasted accelerations in sea-level rise (SLR) will shift the position of these critical boundaries in ways we cannot yet fully predict, but landward migration will be impaired by coasta...

ERDC TN-EMRRP-ER-12, Use of Alternative Materials for Oyster Reef Construction

BACKGROUND: Oysters are filter-feeding bivalve molluscs that form cohesive reefs in estuarine and near-coastal waters. In addition to their economic value, oysters can exert a powerful influence on water quality, phytoplankton productivity, and nutrient cycling (Dame 1996; Ulanowicz and Tuttle 1992); they also affect current patterns, flow, and sedimentation rates (Lenihan 1999). Oyster reefs o...
